Victoria Harbor Selkies are unique to British Columbia, and are not the same Selkies tied to the folklore of the Northern Isles of Scotland. While there are some commonalities such as their seal pelts being tied to how they shift, these Selkies are uniquely their own sub-species. Steeped in death energies, they serve as guardians to burial grounds and grave sights situated on the many islands located within the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As a race, they have a deep attachment to bones, and are able to see and hear ghosts, using bones as attunement tools to better sense them. Like magnets for the dead, many Victoria Harbor Selkies attract ghosts to them and spend a great deal of their time trying to help these specters conclude any unfinished business so that they can rest, return to the earth, and join the cycle of rebirth or find their eternal rest.
Victoria Harbor Selkies can call upon deceased relatives, or ancestors further back in the bloodline in order to help their companions process difficult emotions, as well as assist with any hereditary magics. These Selkies consider themselves to be living conduits, and because of all the energy they channel, they often have rather muted and subdued personalities. This can make them a bit difficult to place as many people prefer bolder and larger personalities types. While each selkie is their own unique individual and more boisterous personas do exist, members of this race often favor solemnity. By nature, they tend to be a bit aloof, are read as somewhat easily distracted. Due to the way that they attract ghosts to them and are able to hold conversations with them—sometimes several at a time—they may seem a bit spaced out from time to time. They are very good at keeping their companions safe from the ghosts that are drawn to them, and are experts at putting up barriers to block energies from mingling together, and can spot a malicious spirit from a mile away.
If you are interested in mediumship, death work, bone throwing, water magic, or similar craft paths, these selkies can make a wonderful addition to your family.
