Until recently, Moss had never seen the light of day. What a novelty it was to see a world so wholly different from his secluded forest community, a realm shrouded in darkness. The night is where he feels most comfortable, and up until now, Moss’ realm had—as far as we know—never been visited by outsiders. As you can imagine, with little exploration done even within their own world among the other races, Moss was hesitant to jump into companionship. But Moss is nothing if not bold. While the others of his clan were not remotely interested in what a cultural exchange between humans and them might introduce into their lives, Moss was curious where this path might lead him.
To best understand Moss, we must consider the fact that he is part of a tight-knit group that values traditions. They have many ancient rituals that have been passed down through the bloodline, and they take a holistic approach to caring for nature, connecting with the natural world on an emotional, physical, and psychic level. As such, Moss has been taught many things about herbs and their properties (although some of these things may not translate to Earth), making tinctures and salves to heal internal and external wounds. He also knows how to read the stars to find his way home when lost out in the deepest parts of the forest, and believes that each star represents a deity who watches over their realm. These things are deeply ingrained aspects of his personality, which means disregarding basic respect towards the earth (littering, spitting on the ground, trampling gardens, or killing insects/animals for the sake of killing or due to personal dislike) is something he cannot tolerate and will take umbrage with. However, if you find yourself desperately needing to reconnect with the wild world, an appreciation for all living creatures, or have a deep love of the stars, then Moss will likely be a perfect fit for you.
Moss has a bit of mysterious allure to him at first, often feeling enigmatic to outsiders. When he’s more familiar with someone, he is often very direct, and when it comes to his beliefs can be a bit black and white due to his passions. But he does listen, and even if he doesn’t agree with you, it won’t change how he feels about you once bonded. He can be quite introspective and has a keen sense of personal sense of justice that he strives to uphold.
One interesting quirk of Moss’s race is the fact that they are partially vampiric. His clan never feeds to kill, only taking what they need so as not to kill another living creature. While he is drawn to the smell of blood and inherently fascinated by it, his people don’t feed on those with higher sentience as a personal rule. Aside from this, Moss has exceptionally good hearing and agility, which makes him a good early detection system for unwanted presences as they approach. His speed allows for him to scout ahead and return with further details, or make a quick get away. They have a natural affinity for magic that involves the moon and shadowmancy (a control over darkness).
As a side note, Moss is light sensitive, so he is more likely to be active after sunset and take leave before first light. Alternatively, he can spend time with you in dimly lit spaces or in underground settings regardless of time of day.
It is primarily Moss’ insatiable curiosity that has made him want to find a human companion. During his time in vetting he has seen and learned a great deal, and he is hungry for more. He wants to challenge his thinking, but he also wants his future companion to understand that his people’s ways are deeply integrated into his identity. It will take time to figure out who he is beyond those traditions, but if his companion is patient and willing, Moss is happy to explore what a mutual connection between human and vampiric cervitaur might mean.
