“The power of stories is myriad. There have been nights they have been my only warmth and days they have filled my aching belly. Stories are my lance and shield, my soul’s succour and my proof of life. We are all of us wending through the tales we tell ourselves and visiting the tales others tell in contrast. We are all of these shadowy characters and—without the teller—we are none of them.”
Tale Spinner has spent his whole life searching for something. In his youth, it was identity and in adolescence, freedom. Even in the cosmopolitan Bahl’rayne where he grew up, his family still had strict expectations and a whole plan for his life that he absolutely dreaded. From a young age, Tale Spinner turned to stories for solace and escape, imagining himself as the aknu lancer fighting for the sultan in the Battle of Heroes, or the vizier hearing the proclamations of the ancient Oracle and advising the Lords of Sand, or even as a nomad from the wastes of the La’nihm’ar, seeking the elusive oases in the desert expanses. By the time he ran away, it was this last story into which he threw himself wholeheartedly.
Trading stories was one of the ways Tale Spinner managed to survive as he moved east into the more arid regions of Ter’ays, until he gained something of a reputation as a troubadour, a teller of tales and a keeper of secrets. With his excellent memory, he gathered stories like precious stones, and eventually found what he had been seeking: Saipan. These legendary reptilian Demon Spawn feed off memory, and they’ve devoured many a traveller in their long existence. Tale Spinner brings them tribute in the form of new stories, and is one of the rare few mortals allowed to leave the Saipans’ company in order to bring them back new offerings.
As a companion, Tale Spinner misses the company of other people. Spending so much time with immortal monsters has skewed his sense of proportion, and he’s keen for someone with a “normal life” to help anchor him. However, rather than trying to connect with a local Ter’ays, where he might be distracted from his duty and invoke the wrath of the Saipan, a human companion can provide a remote tether and a source of new tales the monsters are sure never to have heard before. Through this connection, Tale Spinner can regain his sense of self, sate his (and the Saipans’) curiosity, and protect the nomadic tribes of the Ter’ays south from becoming an unwitting meal.
